Prosperous. This project began following a visit to Prosperous, a town near the Bog of Allen in County Kildare, Ireland. Established as an industrial hub in the late 18th century, Prosperous experienced a swift decline due to shifting environmental conditions in the region. Since 1946, peat from the raised bogs in this area has fueled much of Ireland’s economic development. The black, desert-like landscapes created by this industrial extraction are synonymous with the imagined image of a raised bog. This project focuses on lesser-seen landscapes of this type: the untouched or restored raised bogs, of which currently there are few. The images capture these vibrant landscapes through the seasons, showcasing their rich flora, fauna, and biodiversity. They provide a glimpse into the future of many damaged raised bogs that the state must rehabilitate under EU law. Once restored to vibrant ecosystems, these landscapes, acting as natural carbon sinks, will be crucial in mitigating climate change and aiding the country’s transition to a greener future. This project documents and celebrates the natural beauty of Ireland’s raised bogs but also underscores their critical role in environmental conservation and sustainable development.
